Megvii and Vivo have jointly launched a series of 3D facial recognition applications based on a depth-sensing camera, including 3D secure payment and 3D plastic surgery at the Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2018 (MWCS18).
Vivo is providing the 3D sensing technology, for which other uses include 3D head modeling, 3D beautification, and 3D portrait lighting, according to the announcement. Megvii says the 3D facial recognition capabilities enable individuals to preview the effect of planned plastic surgery, and that its multiple portrait lighting options can make photographs more natural and lively.
Megvii expanded from Face++, which it says is the world’s biggest open platform for facial recognition, and its FaceID identity verification platform to enter the smartphone market in 2017. The company now says it is focussing research and development on its 3D algorithm, products, and applications.
The three core algorithm model structures provided by Megvii enable Vivo phones to perform facial recognition within 0.1 second, reconfiguration within 0.03 seconds, and payment accuracy of 0.01 percent with liveness detection from its ShuffleNet mobile convolutional neural network. This will enable Vivo users to make mobile payments using facial recognition as their primary method of identity verification, according to the companies.
The new OPPO Find X also features Megvii 3D facial recognition, with similar performance speeds.
